I made this zesty “Shrimp and Grits” with ‘Italian’ grits; polenta. Polenta is made from ground yellow or white cornmeal and slowly cooked rendering a smooth and creamy texture. I melted a generous amount of Sharp Cheddar with a bit of butter in my polenta and perfectly paired it with a spicy, barbecue shrimp. I sautéed my trinity of onion, green pepper, and garlic with fiery Creole seasoning and barbecue sauce to flavor the shrimp. The contrast between the textures and flavors of the intensely hot shrimp and the cool, velvety polenta was indescribably delicious. It was pure bliss in my mouth. This is a quick and easy dish to make but so impressive to eat.

Spicy Barbecue Shrimp & Cheddar Cheese Polenta
(by Reeni of Cinnamon Spice & Everything Nice)
1 cup long-cooking Polenta
1 yellow onion, diced
1 green pepper, sliced in thin strips
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons Olive oil
1-2 tablespoons Creole seasoning, depending on how hot you like it (Emeril's Creole/Bayou
Blast seasoning or recipe to follow)
1 and 1/ 2 cups Barbecue Sauce (like Jack Daniels)
1 and 1/12 pounds of medium or large shrimp, cleaned
2 tablespoons Butter
2 cups shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Cook Polenta according to package directions.
While the Polenta is cooking saute the onion, green pepper, and seasoning in oil in a large
saute pan on low heat until tender. Add garlic and saute for two to three minutes longer.
Turn heat up to high-medium and add barbecue sauce and shrimp. Cook until shrimp curl up.
Remove from heat.
When the Polenta is finished cooking add the butter and cheddar whisking until melted.
Serve the shrimp over a generous helping of Polenta.
Seasoning Mix
(adapted from Emeril)
1 tablespoon Paprika
1 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Garlic powder
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 and ½ teaspoon onion powder
2 teaspoons cayenne or 1 and 1/2 teaspoon Peperoncino
1 and ½ teaspoon oregano
1 and ½ teaspoon thyme
Mix well in a small bowl. Store in a covered container.

I still haven't tried polenta. I really need to get on the ball and get some, it looks mad good.
I would devour this! Mixing everything up and creating a delish meal like this? Oh heavens yes!
I made chicken last night and we had polenta with Parmesan for our side. Don't you just love it?
Your recipe looks and sounds wonderful.
Oh plate of goodness...come home to momma! I am a freak for BBQ and grits, or should I say polenta! What a great combination girl...
oh, that looks fan--TAS-tic! Though, I had to chuckle about "Italian Grits". My mom looooves grits but can't stand polenta. Go figure. It must be the southern in her.
Oh Reeni...ya killin' me, sista! This looks so amazing...great flavor combo! yum.
cheddar cheese polenta?! that sounds so delicious :)
Creamy cheesey polenta matched with fiery barbecue flavours? Bring it on!
I ADORE polenta and spicy dishes!!
This does look fabUlous!!! I have had a few weeks of company & swore I wasn't cooking for a couple of days...this is killing me. Wish your blog came with smell-o-vision! Delightful post!
This looks wonderful. I'm liking the flavors going on in this dish.
Will quick cooking polenta be substituted with the long cooking polenta?
Wow, this mixes so many flavors I would have not thought of combining - the polenta, cheese, shrimp and bbq. It sounds so great! This one is definitely getting bookmarked. Yum!
These pictures made my stomach growl! I've never made polenta either. And it looks like something I would love!! Thanks for the recipe.
I love shrimp. This looks absolutely wonderful. A definite try for me. Fondly
Shrimp, polenta, cheese, spices...sounds like heaven to me!!! I have a hard time not cracking about when I see anything about Emeril after visiting Donna's blog!!! LOL!
Maya: Quick cooking Polenta will work fine.
Love the combo of bbq sauce, emeril seasoning, shrimp, and cheddar cheese in one dish!! It just sounds so very delicious. You make the most awesome creative dishes!
This looks incredible! I don't usually make polenta so this will be something new and interesting. You really do have the best recipes.
BBQ and shrimp, that is a new one for me! It sounds delicious and looks great! :)
Mmmmmm, I love shrimp! It's probably my fave protein. Until a few months ago I always thought BBQ sauce on shrimp yuck but I'm a changed girl and will give this a try for sure!

This looks so good. I would eat the whole thing and not leave any for anyone else!
I don't know what it is about bbq sauce that makes it go so great with polenta...they are such an unlikely combo. The polenta side dish I have on my blog right now was served with bbq pulled pork, so we are thinking along similar lines. Both of your recipes look great!
Wow yummy! that shrimps and barbecue are mine, can you give me some? mmmm.. looks so yummmy!
I want polenta, I want polenta, I want polenta!!! WHOAA why does singapore NOt have polenta? how did I ever ignore them back when I lived right across whole foods?

Shrimp and grits is one of my favorite combo dinners EVER. It's just classic comfort. But, polenta, well, that's taking things to a whole new level. And adding cheese?! Even better. I love this play on the old classic. It looks beyond delicious!
What a great twist on shrimp and grits! I have to try this!
I've been wanting to make polenta, you make it look so easy! :) Now I am tempted to try making it.

This looks really good! Shrimp is one of the few fish that I like, and polenta with sharp Cheddar sounds awesome!
All the meals in your home are beautiful.
I'm getting fat just reading everyone's blogs today :)

Beautiful!
Reeni I can't believe my eyes. We have a very similar dish made of cornmeal, butter and cheese. The only difference, we don't use any shrimps in it. and we call it "muhlama". I'm surprised as this dish is not known by many people here. Great recipe and picture!
Your pictures are so vivid and clear that it just makes you want to dive into this dinner!!
At this point, I'll only be repeating the superlatives offered by everyone else, so I'll just say: DITTO!!
Just had my supper, but seeing this photos make me hungry again.
Cheers,
elra
I loved shrimp and grits when I visited my daughter in Charleston, but I think polenta is even better.
The spicy shrimp is the best topping ever. So beautiful...and so tasty...
OMG this looks delicious - can't wait to try this one ASAP!
Dear Reeni
Your dishes are always so well presented.
Amazing.
That looks awesome!!! I love creamy polenta like that. I tried to make it once... but it turned out too thick. I'll have to try again.
