Black bean burgers are my favorite kind of burger. I like them better than beef ones. There it is. I admitted it. I’m hooked. These are hundreds of times better than frozen – the ones that taste like their made from the same stuff their boxed in. You don’t have to be a vegetarian to like these. Even my Dad (surprise!) loves these and he is very into Beef. I like to make up a batch or two and freeze them, even though they don’t last long. They call out for me to eat them, and so I do! For breakfast, elevens, lunch, afternoon tea, supper, and dinner! I can’t stop until their all gone. They tickle my taste buds and make my tummy smile.
These ‘faux’ burgers are quick and easy to make, cheap, and especially good for you. They have a hearty, smoky flavor that is enhanced from the spicy Chipotle peppers. Speckles of sharp cheddar cheese and green onion run throughout. They have great texture; crispy and crusty on the outside, soft yet firm in the middle. And they hold up well, no crumbling. Serve these on a bun and trick the carnivores in your family – they will end up loving them without missing the meat!

Chipotle Black Bean Burgers
(by Reeni)
1 can Black beans, drained and rinsed, a 1/4 cup of them set aside
1/2 cup green onion, chopped
3-4 chipotle peppers in adobo and 1-2 tablespoons of the sauce, smashed with a fork into a paste
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 egg, beaten
1/3 - 1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs
1/4 cup ketchup or barbecue sauce
1/2 teaspoon Chile powder
1/2 teaspoon Cumin
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
I use a potato masher to smash the beans but if you'd like to use a food processor that is fine, too. Just be sure not to turn the beans into soup, chop them up coarse.
In a large bowl mash the beans with a potato masher. Add in all of the ingredients including the whole beans set aside. Mix well. Form into four patties and cover with saran wrap or wax paper. Let firm up for a half an hour in the fridge.
Cook on a George Foreman grill about 5 minutes or fry in a large skillet sprayed with baking spray or lightly coated with oil. They may be too fragile to put right on an outdoor grill, I've yet to cook them this way.
Serve on a soft bun with onion, avocado and mayonnaise. Or with your favorite fixings.

Wow, these look amazing. Your pictures are so good, I'm hungry just looking at it! I am so sick of frozen veggie burgers, so I will definitely be making these soon!
I would just love these...but my family would say they wouldn't. Worth a trick?
these look so good but I would have to ask for a slice of cheese melted on top of mine - if I am going to be faked out I want to go all the way.....
I'm definitely copying this recipe down because it looks really excellent, and I'm always on the lookout for cheap, nutritious options! Thanks!
I love anything with chipotle in it thus these black bean burgers are a sure hit for me!
Amazingly..They looks so good..even better than the beef ones..yummy one Reeni..got to try this..:)
I am so trying this! And what is that deliciousness on top? I love onion rings. They look great. Thanks for the new recipe!
I just had black beans last night! These look really delicious. Spicy food is a favorite in my house and I'll bet these would be a hit even with DH, the carnivore [as I call him hehehe].
I've never really tried a black-bean burger before. I've tried making black bean "pancakes" though and I suppose they are about the same? But anyway, they looks REALLY good, and I have to second doggybloggy in that a slice (or two) of cheese on top would make it even more perfect, if that is even possible!
Whoa. I know I would love these. They look and sound awesome! Great recipe, Reeni!
I love black beans, so these look fantastic to me! SO healthy and yummy!
i'll take one!!!
Looks fantastic. I've been looking for a veggie burger kind of thing, I'll have to give this a try.
Wow these look amazing! I can only imagine how great they are and I bet with all the fiber from the beans they are more filling than beef.
Chipotle is awesome with everything.
This:
"taste like their made from the same stuff their boxed in"

Awesome burgers. Healthy, too! Love it!! I need to get some black bean now. I mean right now!!
I am loving these - and I do love veggie burgers. Have had black bean ones - but not with your amazing spices. So will need to try these. The photos are mouth-watering Reeni. How can you not try one?
Yum, I love "faux" burgers :) Beans are beefy, too...LOL! Looks delish.

Reeni you have my mouth watering! I have a black bean burger recipe I use, but now I am going to try yours. I love the chipotle addition. I'm also wanting to know what is on top of that burger...it looks so yummy!
Reeni, I'd pass on the beef anytime for one of your black bean burgers!! Thanks for a great recipe :0)
I have to be honest, I have never eaten a tasty bean burger... yet. They usually end up so dry. Yours actually looks really yummy, I would try it, but I would put cheese on it :), thats cause I am a piggy.

Woohoo! i love bean burgers. Yummm and pic is so good.
I am not a fan of black beans but I must admit this does look and sound very good.
They certainly LOOK fantastic. I'm not a black bean fan- do they taste much like beans or do you think I could trick myself into eating them?
I love black bean burgers too. I haven't made them in a while though. I'll have to try out your recipe for sure. Great idea to freeze a few for later.
I've been wanting to make black bean burgers for a while and this sounds like a great recipe! My grill pan is going to be breaking out of the cupboard soon! :)
Oh wow - these look WONDERFUL! I love black beans. I wonder if I can get my hubby to try these. I think he'd like them... I just wont' tell him what's in them until after he tries! :)
Black beans are also considerably cheaper than beef... so they may come in handy in my $100 challenge coming up this month!
Oh, yum! I'm definitely trying these!
They look so good and delicious. I'd love to try this. Sounds very flavorful too!

That looks awesome! You have convinced me, I have to make black bean burgers.
I am so impressed with your photos. They are absolutely gorgeous! The recipe looks great too. Did you use chipotle chile powder or chili powder?
Thank you so much for this recipe. I love veggie burgers but fresh made veggie burgers would be so much better. We try to have at least one vegetarian meal a week. I can't wait to try these. Stopping by from SITS.
Oh my word Reeni these look fantastic, I've never had one before but that picture is just taunting me to try it!
I have to try this! I'll see if I can fool my boyfriend into thinking its a real burger.
i have been looking for veggie burger that can actually stay together to grill and eat. This one looks like a winner. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Reeni. I was surprised to hear you say you used to live in Tucson. That would have made us practically neighbors. :)
If your Dad gives these burges the thumbs up, that good enough for me. Have a great holiday weekend my friend.
This is GORGEOUS! Your photo pops out of my screen!
I would like to try this. Sounds healthier than our usual fare, grins.
These sound great and although I am not sure if we can get black beans, I will definitely look out for them.
Gosh...this looks simply delish. I love alternates...not being much of a beef fan myself.
I do believe I'm going to make these tonight! I have chipotle peppers in my frigde with no idea what to do with them, these look perfect!

Oh I'll have to try these! I've been trying to increase my fiber so I bought black beans.
p.s. I picked you for the Kreativ Blogger award on my blog.
They look sensational - I love the way you put anything together. I've been agnostic as far as the meat/ veggie part of the burger goes, just give me a burger but I might have to be a bit more picky in the future.
I've never had a black bean burger before, it looks delicious! They look like a lot of fun to make.
Reeni, I just "submitted" a blueberry recipe...hahaha! SOOO late, I know!
I love black beans and always have them around, but I've actually never had a black bean burger, believe it or not. Yours looks SO delicious! I definitely need to try one!
This is my first visit. I love your blog. Your header, the whole look. And I love black bean burgers!
Do these burgers really taste good or are you having us on? I must say I was a little apprehensive about eating bean pie, but it tasted really good. I guess I am going to have to give these bean burgers a go. Thanks for the recipe.
